Defending champion Estudiantes opened the Argentina Clausura tournament on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Newell's Old Boys. Gaston Fernandez scored in the 13th minute and Gabriel Mercado made it 2-0 in the 24th, chipping in from close range. Fernandez's penalty in the 43rd was saved before Juan Cobelli netted a late consolation goal for Newell's in the 90th minute.
